Bibliography

Project Conclusion

This is my overall all conclusion to my Elizabethan project.I have enjoyed this project hugely, from learning about the traditional Elizabethans, how much the Elizabethans have inspired today's culture to finally creating my contemporary Elizabethan look.

As i began research in September i had already started creating a look in my head, which slowly developed throughout the project into my final images which i did last week. i am very happy with them as i feel they have everything i had imagined from the very beginning. Also creating Georgia's designs and learning about all of her inspiration was amazing and it went really well.

I have found inspiration in places i never thought i would find any during this project from hair in my sink to my dinner, the Queen Elizabeth The First will always be in the back of my mind as a small part of inspiration for everything i do from now on.

Timed assessment - Gorgia design

These are the final images from the times assessment where i had to create gorgias designs on her in a time limit which was of one and a half hours not including the time we had to take the photos of the finished look.
The assessment went very well with minimum panic's and mostly calm behavior. I am very proud with the completed look with the hair and the make-up expressing exactly what she had asked of me.

Timed Assessment - Final Images

After the assessment was finished we took the photos of the look and they came out so perfectly I am so happy with the work Georgia has done to follow my designs, they look amazing and express everything I was trying to show when I put together all my inspiration and influences thought out this project.

Mood board

I have decided to create a mood board that links all of my inspiration for my final look from over the semester before the assessment. This mood board captures all different forms of influence!

Starting obliviously with Queen Elizabeth, from all my research this image is my favorite of her the orange colours and her ginger flowing hair reflect everything about the Elizabethans, and there royal colors. But as i wanted something a little bit more outside the box other than just using one form of inspiration and twisting it slightly.
i went into researching harajuku girls in japan, as they use alot of decoration in there hair much like Queen Elizabeth used to except instead if pearls, i wanted to use flowers as a sign of innocence, which relates to the motley crew lyrics i have found saying about the flowers and razors in her hair show innocence, Elizabeth may have been innocent but she had a power as sharp as razor blades. So by using buns as the main feature on top of the head surrounded by flowers, and also spraying the hair gold, i am incorporating the harajuku influences with the buns on top of the head, with loads of decoration, but the flowers show Elizabeth's innocence and the gold shows royalty. The buns on top also resemble my New Elizabethan influences which was George Lucas, the writer of start wars, the hair shows aspects of princess Lai's hair in the films.
Then the pin curls around the face are a Elizabethan Tradition.

Onto my make-up which was inspired by the images on my mood board as well, the white skin, and white eye lashes are Elizabethan traditions, but with blue eyebrows which i was inspired by for the harajuku girls, who have very bright/eccentric make-up, with bright orange contouring and ombre pink lips.

Final Timed Assessment 250 Word Evaluation

On receiving Georgia’s face charts, she gave me excellent instructions and diagrams to follow which made the whole task a lot easier from the beginning. We practiced many times leading up to the assessment each time becoming better and better at creating the full look.
During the timed assessment, I felt very pressured and tense but after creating the full hair design with no mistakes or panicking, I feel I worked to my full potential even though it was slightly changed at the least minute by Georgia adding a headdress to the design. When it came to the make-up, I created the base, then it came to the part which I struggled with the most which was the eye brows. Initially I made them uneven and had to rub them out and start again. Looking back I should have practiced the eye brows a little more than the rest of the look which I felt very confident with leading up to the assessment. I managed to do the rest of the make-up with no mistakes. Although I was still making small adjustments when there were only thirty seconds to go, I couldn't have worked any faster throughout the whole assessment without making  mistakes or missing parts out and I am confident that the last second alterations and perfections enhanced the overall outcome. Personally I am very pleased with myself and my final creation as I never thought in the first semester of being here I would be able to create something I’m so proud of that I didn't even design.

Practicing Georgia's Final Design

In this practical lesson, after receiving Georgia's final face chart design, i started in my first practice creating the design on her face, considering this was the fist day i had seen the face charts and hair designs i feel this went very well and i managed to almost perfectly re create the face chart. Except for the eyebrows which i struggled with.

More practicing - gorgias design

We practiced Gorgias design multiple times, each time i become more and more confident with the complete look, the favorite part of the look for me was created the huge victory roles on the top of her head, which i thought turned out very well , i used to create vintage hair at vintage markets for people who would come along with there 50's style dresses and so many bags filled with crusting antiques, where i would use allot of victory rolls, pin curls ect. so i am experienced in that area.

Final face Chart

This is my final face chart, which Georgia will be working from on Monday when she creates my design on me. I have added to this design strong orange contouring throughout the design and also two tiny diamonds stuck just underneath the eyes, to add more Elizabethan decor.

Final Ideas Presentation.

First face chart:
My first face chart was inspired by the monochrome of blue;
I created it using different shades of blue throughout the face. I was inspired using mood boards showing blue in nature and the catwalks. It is a cold shade which expressed the cold harshness of queen Elizabeth’s attitude toward men, protecting her country and being told what to do. On the first slide i fell these two images show exactly the idea of the project they almost are like mirror reflections of Elizabethan style and contemporary style, they are both facing the same way, they have each very stylish hair for there day. They resemble the same images but in different time periods.
Second face chart:
In my second face approached in a completely different way, using some classic Elizabethan colors,  like whiting out the face, and using bright red lipstick, but with twists such as blue eyebrows and no make-up except whiting out the eye lashes like they used to. This expressed my Elizabethan is a completely different way because it looked slightly like a dame from a panto, which is totally not the look I was going for. Slightly Alice in Wonderland esc!
Third face chart:
For my third face chart is was a slight combination of the two other ideas that I feel come together perfectly to create exactly what I was looking for. Starting with a white satin complexion, slight glowing all over the face which is very modern as they liked a matte complexion. Then have a light blue eyebrow and no eye make-up and just clear gloss over the lips and around the eyes, a clear mascara to just make the eyes pop.

This is my final chosen look.

Lip liners/Fuller Lips

To prep the lips, always apply a layer of Carmex before the lip liner or lipstick. This will not only give a much smoother finish, but will help to eliminate dry or chapped lips. If the model does have dry lips, you can use a muslin cloth and some exfoliate.
To line the lips:
·         begin at the corners of the mouth and without taking the liner off the lips
·          Work in very small forwards and backwards strokes to achieve a neat line on the lips.
·         When you reach the cupids bow, draw a straight line down the centre of the lips. This will help you to make the lip liner symmetrical.
·         Then fill the lips in with the desired colour.

Colours

I was sat down to eat dinner at a trendy Japanese restraint in the centre of southampton, when I look down at my food and the colours surrounded me, the greens surrounded by a dense white barrier of white, keeping all the good stuff inside, and it couldn't help but remind me of the white wall of make-up Elizabeth used to wear, a barrier protecting her true self from the world.

First final Elizabethan look

I have been experimenting with my first final hair and make-up finished creation inspired by a Comtempary twist on a Classic Elizabethan look.

For the make-up I was inspired by the looks created Vivian Westwood recently, using blocks of clashing colours with a matte white base and red lips, much like the Elizabethans.

For the hair I have been comparing the sixties with the Elizabethan era,how very big hair was suddenly back in fashion. How twiggy is seen as a new Elizabethan by becoming such an inspirational super model, she has inspired so many girls to become models do matter what there height is. I have combined Elizabethan plating with a sixties beehive.

Elizabethan make-up

To create traditional Elizabethan style make-up.
First cleanse, tone and moisturise the skin.
Then start with a heavy white base spread all over the skin to create a very pale base.
Then start to coat the eyebrows and eye lashes in white.
Then continue to create a light pink powder to lightly dab onto the lips and the apples of the cheeks.

Final face charts

Here are two more face charts which I have created to go towards finding my final Elizabethan look.

I have been inspired by traditional Elizabethan looks, and also looking into the recent creations seen I the cat walks, where I found I was inspired by reading the "LWF beauty report" on "fashion bite" which was on Vivienne westwoods recent creations using bold clashing colours and a very white base to creat something very reminiscent of the Elizabethans.
Above are my face charts and below are the Vivian Westwood creations.

Paper self lashes

The company Paperself are one of the most reminiscent companies of the Elizabethans out there. Much like the Elizabethans used to, with beauty products they have created something very common like fake eyelashes into a brand new creation, out of something widely available to anyone...paper!

We did a workshop on Paperself lashes, applying them and being experimental, learning that fake eye lashes are not only for the eyes but can be used anywhere and everywhere you can think of to create a very "outside the box" style.
This is my model with my blue monochrome colour make-up and Paperself lashes on her lips and eyes. I think this adds a twist to the look uses the lashes on the lips.

My New Elizabethan - George Lucas.

George Lucas – Writer/director of Star Wars

"George Lucas has achieved what few artists do; he has created and populated a world of his own. His 'Star Wars' movies are among the most influential, both technically and commercially, ever made."―Ebert & Roeper

It's been over 30  years since "Star Wars" first exploded into theatres, but the laser filled swashbuckling  sci-fi films from writer-director George Lucas have left a legacy no other blockbuster.

George Lucas could definitely be a new Elizabethan. He managed to completely change sci-fi and the film industry over night when the Star Wars trilogy was released in 1977. Nothing like the special effects and vast sets from the films had ever been seen before, which lead the way in influencing films such as “The Matrix” and “The Lord of the Rings”.

The films not only changed and influenced pop culture; it has changed millions of people lives, in the 2001 UK census, 390,000 people stated their religion as Jedi, making it the fourth largest religion surveyed, dedicated fans cover themselves in tattoos, spent millions on merchandise, there is even a dedicated day to star wars May The 4th. Star wars influences the film, TV, special effects and sci-fi industries every day.

Final Photoshoot.

I completed my final photo shoot on Tuesday, using my blue themed mood board, pose mood board and other inspirational images including fashion and hair styling. I changed my lighting from the practice shoot, and decided to use natural lighting rather than studio lighting, Because it lit my model with a blue tint, and gave the images more depth.
I wanted some attitude within my photoshoot, which is why i had my model with her rock chic style hair flowing free and her blue festival chic fur coat, sticking her tongue out and winking. I was very inspired by ID magazine for this idea.
I am very happy with my final images, we will be learning to make them even better in post production.

This image is my personal favorite because i think it
really captivates what i was trying to portray.

Fallen hair

I cut my flat mates hair the other day, and the hair in the sink reminded me of the scene in the film Elizabeth, it echoed the scene when she cuts her long flowing locks off before battle to give we a new strong less childlike appearance. The brown hair falling into the sink, half down the plug and all over my floor, it was like her innocence falling being cut off from her body.

Graphic Design Inspiration

I have come across some really inspiring Graphic design, a few of the ones i have found made me think about the colors and the messages the images are giving out, much like how Elizabeth wanted to give out messages by the way she looked. i have found them so interesting as i love graphic design, so incorporating them into my Elizabethan project is really inspiring for me.

Elizabethan Graphic Design

I have been trying to look into some graphic designers that have been influenced by the Elizabethans, but i haven't managed to find any as of yet! which is really disappointing as i wanted to look into as many different types of influence as i could to help me develop my three face charts.

Photo shoot - Practice

I did a practice photo shoot today in preparation for my final photo shoot, I used my blue themed face chart and my mood boards which I have already posted for inspiration. I then created a completely monochrome blue themed look, using my model Lalia. I decided to use studio lighting, which I set up before hand, using a standard lighting set up. I was shooting in RAW, on manual, shutter speed –  1 over 60, ISO- 100, an aperture of F8 and a white back drop.

I wanted a shoot with attitude and a rock chick vibe, the colour blue was chosen because it is cold and reminds me of the ocean which is ruthless but playful. I think I achieved what I have planned successfully, and am very proud of the results. But I plan to improve further on what I have created and shot today when it is time for my final shoot in two weeks.

Lips and Eyes.

Lips and eye make-up

Equipment:  natural eye shadow pallet, highlighter, rounder eye shadow brush, angle brush, powder, concealer, lipstick pallet, mascara, clear gloss, eye brow gloss.
Eyes:
·         Prime and conceal around the eye.
·         Powder eye a lot
·         Place thick powder underneath the eye increase of any eye shadow splashing under the eye, it makes it a lot easier to just blow away rather than smudging  it across the face.
·         Highlight the indented areas of the eye, above and under the eyebrow and underneath the eye.
·         Use the rounder brush to work on the inner and up to the brow using a lighter brown shadow.
·         Then start working in a darker shadow, around the outer part of the eye, lifting softly.
·         Then use eye liner around the edge of the eye lid right up to lash line blending to create a less harsh look, and then repeat at the bottom lash line.
·         Put a small amount of brown brow pencil at the edge of the brow and comb through with brow gloss creating a natural look.
·         Then using a black eyeliner coat both sets of lashes but not heavily for a natural look.
·         Brush away powder for the finished eye look.
Lips:
·          First coat lips in carmex to give then a smooth base to work with, especially if they are slightly dry or chapped.
·         Then I used a light pink lipstick using the angle brush to apply it in smooth strokes.

·         Then apply a clear gloss to finish the look off.

Face charts

I have created these face charts using a colour wheel as inspiration, they show the different way you can use a colour wheel as a artist or a makeup artist.
I may be using these when I create my final Elizabethan look.
